Stamping With Felt Tip Pens

Hello,

Today, I am back with Moving Along With The Times and their new challenge “Rainbow/ Rainbow Colours”. I’m going to be focusing on the rainbow colours with this very bright and colourful birthday card. As always, this challenge will run for 2 weeks and will end on Wednesday 15th March 6pm GMT – so if you’d like to enter, make sure to get your card linked to the blog before then! I normally work with fairly muted colours, so it was a bit of a challenge, however, I really enjoyed just slapping the colour on (you’ll see what I mean later in this post 🙂 )

I used a Dovecraft die to cut a cupcake from white card and I repeatedly stamped the “Happy Birthday” sentiment from My Favorite Thing’s The Whole Herd stamp set to create a pattern. This stamp had been part of a larger sentiment, however, it was very easy to carefully snip it apart. I used a variety of inks to stamp the background: Distress Ink Spiced Marmalade, Distress Ink Mustard Seed, Mama Elephant Mojito, Distress Ink Peacock Feathers and Mama Elephant Pacific Blue. For my sentiment, I used the Hero Arts Happy Stamp and Cut – after die cutting the “Happy” from some red card, I cut a banner with my paper trimmer. I brushed Peacock Feathers ink on the edges and stamped the “Birthday” from the Hero Arts set.

I used a die from Avery Elle’s Sweet Scallop set on both vellum and a piece of striped patterned paper; there are two parts to this die, an oval and a scalloped frame – I used both pieces of the patterned paper, however, I only used the oval of the vellum. I adhered the cupcake directly onto the vellum, this meant that I could see through and line up the cake beneath that I had cut from foam. It’s best to use dry adhesive with vellum as, I find, vellum tends to warp with glue. I then placed this on top of the striped paper – this muted the colour slightly so as not to distract from the main feature of the card.

To create my background, I cut the largest My Favorite Thing’s Pierced Rectangle die from some white card and used a circle stamp which had a striped pattern on it – however, with the technique I’m going to be using, the pattern won’t be very visible. I wanted to create a paint splattered background… without paint and I didn’t have a stamp or stencil that would do. So, I used my Scribbilious pens from The Works – these felt tip pens behave in a similar way to distress markers. I put some colour on the stamp before spraying with water causing the ink to move about more freely. I then stamp with different colours, similar to the ink I used on the cupcake.

If you follow my blog you’ll see that I’ve put thread on a lot of my cards, so I have a new motto: if in doubt, get the thread out! The card base looked quite bare and I wasn’t quite sure what to do and I think it helps take away the starkness of the plain white. So, the majority of the time it works!

  1. What a fresh, pretty look – the stripes remind me of birthday candles! Thanks for entering the Anything goes (with a birthday twist) challenge at QKR Stampede.. Dorothy S, DT member
